ABOUT Chiune: VISAS FOR LIFe
A Japanese American travels to Kaunas, Lithuania, in search of a deeper understanding of Sugihara Chiune (Sempo), Japan’s Vice-Consul from 1939 to 1940. On the train platform, she meets an old Lithuanian man who guides her to the Sugihara House, sharing stories that bring the past alive. At the gate, he recites a well-known phrase attributed to Sugihara before departing in silence. He returns once more—as the spirit of Sugihara himself.
ある日系アメリカ人が杉原千畝(センポ)についてもっと知りたいと思い、リトアニアのカウナスへ旅に出た。杉原千畝は、1939−1940年にかけて、カウナスの日本領事館の副領事だった。カウナス駅のプラットフォームで、彼女はリトアニアの老人にスギハラ・ハウスへの道を尋ねると、彼は杉原氏について説明してくれただけでなく、道案内もしてくれた。スギハラ・ハウスの入り口で、彼は杉原氏の言葉として知られる有名な一節を口にし、静かに立ち去った。そして彼は後に、杉原氏の亡霊として再び現れるのである。
About Mariko Anno:
Mariko Anno is the producer, librettist, and co-composer of Chiune: Visas for Life. An ethnomusicologist and performer, she has studied all aspects of noh under master practitioners in Japan for more than two decades, specializing in the nohkan (noh flute). She is an associate professor at Institute of Science Tokyo and holds doctorates in ethnomusicology and flute performance. She is the author of the award-winning Piercing the Structure of Tradition (Cornell, 2020), the first English-language monograph on the nohkan. Drawing on both scholarly research and traditional noh performance practice, Chiune: Visas for Life brings together more than two decades of her work in noh.
