Phoenix Fire film

Theatre Nohgaku proudly announces the completion of Phoenix Fire, a film by member Kevin Salfen. Risen from the ashes of our planned March 2020 Japan-US tour, Phoenix Fire imagines a meeting between Kanō Jigorō, who tried and failed to bring the 1940 Games to Japan, and Ichikawa Kon, who made one of the great sports documentaries about the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Deeply inspired and shaped by noh, Phoenix Fire is both a film and a dance-drama, and its score charts a new course in bringing together elements of traditional chant and instrumental music from noh with contemporary classical music.
