Behind the Noh provides exclusive access to rarely seen aspects of noh. While literary and theoretical components have been researched and archived by scholars around the world, the tactile practice of noh is typically limited to those who make it their life’s work. With this series we continue our mission to help provide insight into the care and practice of this endlessly interesting craft.

Behind the Noh 3

Sunday - December 13, 2020
7am JST
(Saturday - December 12, 5pm US EST)

Streaming Live from the Kitazawa Studio, Tokyo Japan

The mask is the most iconic representation of the art of noh.

Artisans who make these iconic masks spend a lifetime honing their craft, finding and infusing their own spirit into these creations destined to bring life to the characters of noh on the stage.

TN has had the great privilege of working with master carver Kitazawa Hideta as a partner in many of our productions. Join us as Kitazawa-san welcomes us into his private workshop to see the process of making a noh mask.

Starting with a block of seasoned hinoki (Japanese cyprus), Kitazawa-san will walk us through the revelation of the mask that lies within each block of wood. He’ll show us the various tools of the craft, how the carving begins, how it develops, and how the mask is painted. It is a rare glimpse into this seldom seen creative world. For those able to join us live, we'll conclude with a question and answer session. A suggested donation of ¥1500 will be gratefully accepted at our Japanese Paypal site.

(Please be sure to adjust for your own local time zone)

As always, Behind the Noh is free to attend, however, please consider making a donation to help defray our costs. If you watch the livestream, you’ll have immediate access and are welcome to ask questions during the stream.

If you’re not able to attend the livestream, access to a link for an edited video of the livestream will be made exclusively available for a donation of ¥2000 JPY. Donations for viewing the video file can be made here.

This event is limited to 100 people. RSVP Signup deadline is December 11th (December 10 US EST). We anticipate this episode will be popular, so early sign up is encouraged.

(Shortly after signing up you’ll receive a confirmation of your participation. An email of the Zoom invite will be sent to you on December 12th JST.)
