Residencies

Nohgaku Residencies

Theatre Nohgaku members are spread over two continents and numerous time zones. We wish to use residencies sponsored by colleges, universities and other suitable locations to come together to rehearse and premiere new work. Depending on each host’s needs and interests, our residency packages may include:

Workshops in noh movement and music (chant and instruments). Movement sessions offer instruction in kamai - the basic stance in noh; suriashi - the sliding-foot walk; and shimai - the danced sections of noh plays. Music sessions include instruction in utai - the special singing style of noh (chant); and hayashi - the noh "orchestra" of shoulder drum, hip drum, taiko and flute. We can also give students an opportunity to work with noh masks.

Public lecture-demonstration on noh. Open rehearsals and public performance of a work-in-progress, a piece from our repertoire, or a world premiere of a new piece commissioned by and written for Theatre Nohgaku.

Costs to the host will range depending on the length of the residency and the number of participants. Longer residencies are possible (and may be required for a world premiere).

In addition to our fee, we ask the host organization to be responsible for:
Ground Transportation.
Food and lodging.
Publicity and marketing.

All the above terms are negotiable.
