Michigan Rehearsal, 8th Anuual Dallas Writers Workshop

TN just completed its first ever rehearsal at member David Crandall\'s new home in Grand Rapids Michigan. The five day rehearsal included 7 members, roaring fires both artistic and actual, and wonderful evening meals. Richard Emmert introduced his beautiful English arrangement of Sumidagawa. The rehearsal also focused on revisiting David Crandall\'s Crazy Jane for with a possible summer production in the works in Bloomsburg PA. In addition, David Crandall unveiled his retooling of The Linden Tree, a piece he originally composedin the 1980\'s that he has begun reworking for TN with the assistance of his long-time friend, Nick Kroes. It includes 4-part harmony, which was certainly a challenge.

Following the rehearsal, Richard Emmert and John Oglevee headed to Dallas and are poised to lead the 8th Annual TN Writers Workshop thanks to the concerted efforts of Kevin Salfen at SMU. While in Dallas, there are a number of meetings planned as the wheels are slowly turning to put the Sumidagawa/Curlew River project in motion. Check back for updates on the exciting developments as Fall 2011 dates for a tour begin to take shape.

Lead by Artistic Director Richard Emmert, this workshop has opened the eyes of over 50 poets, playwrights, performers, and others in developing their ideas into noh.
See the press release below:

Theatre Nohgaku (TN) is pleased to announce its 8th Annual Writers' Workshop, to be held at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas April 2-4, 2010. Led by TN founder and artistic director Richard Emmert, the workshop will familiarize participants with the structure of classical noh, Japan’s 650-year-old traditional stage art. Mr. Emmert will be assisted by TN founding member John Oglevee.
The Writers’ Workshop began in Tokyo in 2003 and has since alternated annually between Japan and the United States. The workshop is an important part of TN’s mission as a multi-national theatre company championing the creation and performance of new English-language noh. Two noh plays in TN’s repertory are a direct result of the workshop: Pagoda by 2008 workshop participant Jannette Cheong, featured in TN’s just completed European tour, and Pine Barrens by 2003 participant and TN member Greg Giovanni, featured in TN’s 2006 Southeast U.S. tour.
The three-day workshop will cover all aspects of noh but will focus particularly on introducing its complex structural layering of spoken text and how it is integrated with music and dance. Participants will also view noh videos to better understand these structural characteristics.
This workshop benefits playwrights, poets and other interested wordsmiths. Past workshops have been attended by composers, dancers, actors and literature and theatre scholars including award-winning playwrights Erik Ehn, Ruth Margraff and Deborah Brevoort as well as composer/lyricist Eric Schorr, poet Lee Ann Brown and actor/director Tony Torn.
The total cost of the workshop is $150 USD. Participants with little or no background in noh theatre should prepare by reading translations from Royall Tyler’s “Japanese Noh Dramas” published by Penguin Classics.

Currently registered university students are invited to participate for $75, a 50% discount. SMU students only can participate for $20.

Cost does NOT include transportation, accommodation or food.

The workshop is limited to 15 participants, with a nonrefundable deposit of $50 ($20 for students) due March 1. The remaining amount is due March 25. If more than 15 apply, a waiting list will be created.

2008/08/16 TN Rehearsal Week Proves Fruitful

Pagoda, Crazy Jane, Pine Barrens all get work.

The annual TN summer rehearsal in Bloomsburg PA was quite exciting and much work was done. In addition to remounting rehearsal productions of Crazy Jane and Pine Barrens with different casts, a new work was presented to TN. Pagoda, by Jannette Cheong, developed as part of the 2008 TN Writers Workshop, got numerous readings and rewrites. Planned for a World Premiere in London late fall 2009, this collaboration with the Kita Ryu Oshima noh family is shaping up to be our biggest project yet.

2008/02/07 TN Announces 2008 Writers Workshop

Our Sixth Annual March 14-16

Theatre Nohgaku (TN) is pleased to announce our Sixth Annual Writers’ Workshop. The workshop will take place for three days in Washington D.C. from March 14-16, 2008, and will be lead by TN Artistic Director Richard Emmert. The goal of the annual workshop is to familiarize participants with the structure and character of noh drama in the hopes of guiding them towards the creation of new noh plays for TN. The TN Writers Workshop began in Tokyo in 2003 and has subsequently alternated between Japan and the United States. Pine Barrens, a product of the 2003 workshop and written by TN member and Philadelphia playwright Greg Giovanni with music by Emmert, was toured by TN in North Carolina and Virginia in 2006. TN hopes to add to the canon of performable English noh by introducing noh's complex structural layering of spoken text, sung poetic text, musical accompaniment and dance to today's inspired writers. Past participants have included award-winning playwrights Erik Ehn, Ruth Margraff, Chiori Miyagawa and Deborah Brevoort, musical lyricist and composer Eric Schorr, and poet Lee Ann Brown.
This year's workshop returns to the United States and will be held at The Studio Theatre in Washington D.C. Previous US workshops have been hosted by the New Dramatists in New York City and Princeton University in 2004 and by the California Institute of the Arts in 2006. Although the US does not have the advantage of live noh performances that Tokyo has, Mr. Emmert will use ample video recordings to illustrate and explain noh and its performance and structural characteristics. Greg Giovanni, the author of Pine Barrens, will also participate and present his playwright’s perspective on creating new English noh.
The participation fee for the workshop is $150 which includes copied materials for the three days of seminars. The cost does NOT include transportation to and from the venue of the workshop, nor accommodations or food while attending.
In addition to playwrights, Theatre Nohgaku wishes to encourage poets in particular to attend the workshop. Those with scholarly interest in noh literary and/or musical structure will also benefit greatly from the workshop.

The goal of the workshop is to familiarize participants with the structure and character of noh drama, in the hopes of guiding them towards the creation of a new noh play. Theatre Nohgaku is a multi-national theatre company who is championing the creation of new English-language noh. 2006/02/13 Crazy Jane March Tour Postponed

Dept. of Homeland Security forces TN to call off tour

With great sadness we announce that due to circumstances beyond our control, TN has had to reschedule our upcoming Seattle area tour. As a result of the byzantine nature of the US Dept. of Homeland Security, our esteemed Japanese musicians were not able to get their visas approved in time for their interviews at the US embassy in Japan. This is even with the help of US Sentors! Hats off to the US Dept. of Homeland Security who has kept America safe from world culture once again. Without our musicians, who have been working incredibly hard with writer/director David Crandall, the show cannot be performed. Please check back soon to seen when the performance has been rescheduled.
