Biographies

NAOKO MAESHIBA, a native of Kobe, Japan, has been directing, choreographing, and performing multi-disciplinary works within and outside of the U.S. Her work ranges from site-specific improvisation in collaboration with musicians and visual artists to tightly choreographed full-evening length pieces in theatre. Most recently, she choreographed/directed/performed in Remains of Shadow (Ko Festival, Amherst), Trace (Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, Dance Place, D.C.), The Voyage (Baltimore Theatre Project), 49 Days (Creative Alliance, Baltimore), Spring that has gone too long (Warehouse Gallery, D.C.), and Olfactory Factory (International House of Japan, Tokyo). She has also performed in Ancient Greenland and Ancient Women (Hakushu, Japan) directed by Min Tanaka and Fish in the Garden (Honolulu, HI) directed by Fritz Ludin and Dances We Dance. Her directing credits include The Other Shore by Gao Xingjian (Villa Julie College/Towson University), The Green Stockings by Kobo Abe (Tsunami Theatre Company, D.C), and The Vacant Lot by Ohta Shogo (Kumu Kahua Theatre, Honolulu). She is a recipient of Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award in choreography (2005), Baltimore City Arts & Humanities Individual Artist Grant (2005), Kennedy Center Local Dance Commissioning Project Award (2004), Artist Fellowship Grant in directing from the D.C. Commissions on the Arts and Humanities and NEA (2001-2002). From 2004 to 2005, Metro DC Dance Award nominated her for the category of the outstanding performance, choreography, overall production, and sound design. She currently serves as an assistant professor of Theatre Arts at Towson University, the artistic director of Naoko Maeshiba Performance Collective(www.naopeco.org), and the associate artistic director of Tsunami Theatre Company (www.tsunamitheatre.org).
